…..that it was good.
Is it good today?

The creation story in the Book of Genesis in the Bible tells us that God created the world in six days. On the sixth day towards the end of the work of creation God created man (male and female) in His own image and likeness. While reading and reflecting on this story the question that came to my mind is why didn’t God create man in the beginning itself? Was the creation of man an after-thought? The question can have many answers. One answer that struck my mind looks more appealing to me. When God saw that all that was necessary for man to live was in place He then created man. If God had created man before creating any other thing probably man would not have survived.

God had taken care not only to create the world but to create it in the best way possible so that man may live happily. Each day after creating He had a look at what He had created. And what did He find there? The story says, ‘And God saw that it was good’. For the sake of man, God had not only taken care to create a beautiful world but He was also generous to entrust that entire beautiful creation to man’s care. It is long time now since God entrusted that beautiful creation to man’s care. Hence if not late at least it is a right time now to ask as to what has happened to that creation which was given to man. Is it suitable and beautiful enough for human habitation? The answer is there before everyone to see and understand.

It is estimated that around 35 million acres of forest is being cut every year for various reasons. If this destruction continues at the same tempo as it is now for the next few years, it is said that there will be no forest left on earth by 2050. We can imagine life without trees and forest. We know that two third of the globe is covered with water. But the water that is available for human use is only one percent. The rest is there either in the form of salt or ice. The one percent of water that is available for human use is becoming very scarce. It is said that presently 15 million people don’t have access to clean drinking water. The number of people who die or become ill every year due to consuming contaminated water is 5 million.

In addition to these and number of other things the change in the climate is an issue everyone should think, talk and act on. Climate change is an alarm bell that tells us that all is not well with the environment we live in. It is a wake-up call. The earlier we respond, better it is. God had entrusted the creation in our care to use it and not to misuse it, utilize it and not to exploit it, improve it and not to destroy it. We will be considered as responsible children of God if we leave the creation in a better condition than when we received it.

During the last working year, with your prayers, support and co-operation we were able to contribute our mite in bringing the creation to its best possible shape. While being grateful to God Almighty and thankful to each one of you, we are happy to place before you, our esteemed reader and partner in development, a brief description of the activities of the reporting period. THANK YOU.
